It is the year 1899 – Anton Chekhov, Russia’s foremost dramatist and short story writer, is slowly pining away in the warm Yalta climate, far from his actress Olga Knipper and the pleasures of Moscow.
Long days are filled with writing, strolling on the promenade and exchanging letters with Olga, whilst he longs for the life he had left behind.
Then he sees her: a young lady walking on the promenade, her dog at her side. In the days that follow he becomes a witness to her seduction by a much older man, a Muscovite holidaying in Yalta.
Against his better judgment, Chekhov is drawn into their affair, leaving him at a crossroad in his relationship with Olga when he makes a rash promise to the young woman.
